The Morning After

Getting ready to fry some tomatoes from Aunt Jean's garden.

TFB braved the storm yesterday and made a quick run to Bryn Mawr.  We Stocked up on corn, cabbage, leaks and cremini mushrooms.  Picked up a loaf of Yards Beer bread from Wild Flour bakery for this weeks lunches.  The featured pics are from this morning’s breakfast.  Christine has been aching to fry up the green tomatoes we plucked from Jean’s garden last week.  She coated them in bread crumbs after an egg bath, and threw a bunch of minced garlic in the pan.  I then placed a few perfectly sunny side up’ed eggs on top.  A slice of pesto bread leftover from yesterday’s bruschetta brunch made the perfect sopping implement.

The beauty of the Farm Market community is that, in the face of an impending natural disaster, a state of emrgenecy already declared, Bryn Mawr’s market was full of people and vendors, loading up with cheeses (to eat as soon as the power went out of course), veggies, and baked goods.

Perfect for a late breakfast after a storm

Beans, Sprouts and Salmon Burgers

Wild for Salmon burgers and Northstar Orchard's 'Marvel of Venice' beans make for a great dinner

Christine and I enjoyed a meal consisting of salmon burgers from Wild for Salmon, ‘Marvel of Venice’ beans from Northstar Orchard, and brussel sprouts from Wegmans.  This meal, along with a bottle of Crabby Granny from Frecon Farms, was a great way to start off the week.

Salmon at P’ville

Steve is Wild for Salmon

It was an absolute pleasure meeting Steve and Jenn from Wild For Salmon.  If you plan on picking up some of their wild caught sockeye salmon plan on getting to the market early.  When the line at Wild for Salmon finally slowed down, Jenn was nice enough to tell me a little of how the business started.  A neighbor in Idaho invited them to fish with him in Alaska.  Despite an unsuccessful season net casting for sockeye from a beach, they were hooked.  They returned the next year to work a boat.

A year later Steve was captaining a boat, and a year after that he and Jenn had bought a vessel of their own.  The business has been so successful that they’ve had to drop their prior careers as a teacher and tree specialist in Idaho to meet the demand.  To get the rest of the story details head to Phoenixville or one of the area locations where they sell their salmon and strike up a conversation with this engaging duo.  I walked away with a pack of salmon burgers and one half pound of lox.  Not surprisingly, the salmon spread was sold out so I bought a half pound of Lox so we could make our own.

I enjoyed a bagel with lox and fresh tomato as a snack.

Decisions, decisions...

Breakfast, lunch, dinner I don't care. I'll eat Wild for Salmon any time of day.

Tomorrow we are having the salmon burgers with Northstar Orchards ‘Marvel of Venice’ beans and some corn.  Pics to follow.

I am Wild for Wild for Salmon

TwinFarmBlog will be making a mad dash for the Wild for Salmon stall at the Phoenixville Farmer’s Market tomorrow morning.  If you have not had any of the fillets, salmon spread, or Nova Style Smoked salmon from Wild for Salmon than you just aren’t living.  Keep your eyes on TFB for pictures from our market trip and subsequent salmon recipes.  Yum.  Seriously, get there early or you will miss out.

Dogfish Head Black and Red (w/ Bonus Yeti Photo)

Tammy and I had to wait out some monster thunderstorms on our way back from Wegmans last night.  I figured the best place to do our waiting was at TJ’s Everyday located at the Paoli Station Shops.  TJ’s has one of the best tap lists in the entire Philly area and tweets their newly tapped beers in real time (follow them @TJsbeer).

Dogfish delivers another extreme beer.

TJ’s did not disappoint on this stormy night, delivering a real gem with Dogfish Head’s Black and Red.   Black and Red is a Imperial Stout that is dry hopped during the secondary fermentation with over 100 lbs of organic mint.  The dark roasted malt used in the making of this beer gives it chocolate flavors in the back end which is nicely balanced by a strong dose of fruit.  After a few sips you start to notice some tobacco and coffee highlights.  Don’t be fooled by the strong minty front end of this beer, your palate will acclimate itself to the mint and you will start to see the complexity of this beer.  Another winner from Sam Calagione.  It is only available on draft and has only been out since April so keep an eye out for this intense beer.   You can follow DFH on twitter here: @dogfishbeer.

Here is a picture of a Yeti for your viewing pleasure.  This Yeti can be found at the Regency Cafe in Lansdowne.

Do not make eye contact with the Yeti.

Adventures in Collegeville

Jana from Blooming Glen Farm

Mark, Christine, Tammy, and I made our way back up to the Collegeville Farmer’s Market last weekend.  We are smack dab in the middle of prime growing season and overflowing shopping bags of nutrient filled fruits and veggies are your reward if you make it to the market.

Beautiful ripe tomatoes from Blooming Glen

If I was that kid in the background I would bury my head in a vat of gelato.

If you have a sweet tooth the market is the place to be.  You have your pick of wonderfully flavorful gelato from Jenny and Frank’s Artisan Gelato, baked goods from St. Peter Bakery, or cupcakes from ICED by Betsy.  Good stuff.

Red Earth Farm's Flowers

Following our visit to the Collegeville Market, TwinFarmBlog made a side trip

to the new Appalachian Brewing Company (located on 3rd Ave. in Collegeville).  ABC is still getting their feet underneath them but I suspect that once they get the barrels up and running and the kitchen humming they’ll be good to go.  The brews did not disappoint.

Broad Street Barley Wine, Mad Cameron Wit, and Kipona Fest (August Special)

ABC provides a handy beer style chart on the back of their menu for patrons who are new to the craft beer world.

Cobbler a la Chrissy

Came home to this beauty of a dessert tonight.

Chrissy's peach cobbler, made with Frecon's finest.

Gettin’ Our Frec-on!

TFB will be attending the Frecon Farms‘ Peach Festival Tomorrow.  That will be followed with a stop at Durango’s where Frecon Cider will be on tap.  I’ve been enjoying Frecon’s ciders for the past few weeks, particularly the Crabby Granny.

Let us know if you want to meet up.  All three TFB hounds will be there!
